About Us
Well, really about me - since this is currently a one-person site.
I grew up Catholic and became fairly engrossed in it when two of my brothers died while I was in my teens. But in college, I started studying world religions and realized that many have both right and wrong aspects (IMO). Then as I matured and studied more and more science, I came to realize that they are generally anthropogenic (man-made) and they are really trying to illicit certain behavior from the populous. But, I also realized that they offer a lot to the general population (structure, rituals, rites, practices, hope, etc.) and what they offer has real benefit.
As I came to be a Humanist and moved away from religion I recognized that many of the non-religious belief systems don't account for these beneficial spiritual aspects that religions provide. I have been studying about spirituality and humanism ever since (well, as time permits).
In fact, though, it is just a hobby as I'm really a Software Executive (currently VP of Engineering) in Colorado who usually builds and leads technology departments in startup software companies; and that takes a lot of time!
I try to do what I can by advocating Humanism and Spirituality within Humanism in an educational way. For this, I do the following:
- Manager and writer for the Spiritual Humanist site (ah but you are already here :)
- Board member of the Boulder International Humanist Institute
- Write content for the Spiritual Humanist Blog
- Participate on Humanist and Atheist forums as I find time
- Wrote the book Humanism for Parents - Parenting without Religion
- Am a Humanist Society (an AHA affiliate) Humanist Celebrant
- Am an ordained Humanist Reverend of the Church of Spiritual Humanism
The last two give me the right and privilege to officiate at various ceremonies for non-religious (or agnostic) families. These include:
- Birth Celebrations
- Marriages
- Memorials
- Other less common celebrations (see Rituals)
